The Trevor Project is the world’s largest suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for LGBTQ young people. We are a non-profit that provides 24/7 life-saving support via phone, text, and chat. We also operate the world’s largest safe space social networking site for LGBTQ youth and run innovative research, education, and advocacy programs. We’ve been saving lives every day for over 20 years.
Overview of the role
The Vice President (VP) of Research will serve as the primary leader of The Trevor Project’s growing portfolio of life-saving research on LGBTQ youth mental health. This VP will oversee and lead a growing team and drive the agenda in order to expand the body of research on LGBTQ youth mental health and ensure its findings are communicated to clinicians, researchers, policy makers, the courts, and the general public. The VP of Research will serve as one of Trevor’s public spokespeople and will be one of the world’s leading experts on both LGBTQ youth as well as suicide and mental health. They will help set the overall research strategy including Trevor’s ground-breaking annual National Survey on LGBTQ Youth Mental Health and our upcoming International Survey on LGBTQ Youth Mental Health, oversee internal evaluation and polling initiatives, and lead peer-reviewed publications based on Trevor’s data. The VP of Research will also oversee The Trevor Project’s research staff and serve as the primary liaison with any external partners. Day-to-day responsibilities include leading the Research team by ensuring that ethical guidelines are adhered to, impactful output is produced, research initiatives are properly staffed and timeframe goals are met. Long-term responsibilities include overseeing the performance and development of the Research team and working with leaders both within the Community team and across The Trevor Project to drive innovation so the organization can end LGBTQ youth suicide. The Vice President will need to be a strong, tactical manager as well an inspirational leader.
Who you are
Experienced. You have an extensive track record of research in the fields of suicidology and mental health or in the field of LGBTQ youth (and preferably both). You have managed multiple large-scale research projects from start to finish.
Credentialed. You have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in a relevant field.
Role model and leader. You are a dedicated mentor and compassionate leader for your staff and colleagues alike. You have experience managing people and tasks (including remotely) and can inspire others to do their best work.
Analytical. You have significant quantitative research experience and can conceptualize and interpret complex analyses.
Builder. You’re someone who thinks strategically. You know how to set an ambitious research agenda and focus resources to push our research capabilities even further.
Results-focused. You set clear timelines and drive projects to completion. You know that completing shareable outputs is the key to having a significant impact.
Compelling Communicator. You communicate clearly and concisely and are comfortable identifying and reaching out to relevant stakeholders outside of the organization to build productive research collaborations.
Flexible. You are comfortable navigating ambiguity and working through competing priorities.

What you’ll do
Lead the development, prioritization, and execution of The Trevor Project’s research and evaluation strategy on issues impacting LGBTQ youth and their mental health in conjunction with the leadership team
Manage, coordinate, and inspire the Research team to ensure team accountability, strategic alignment, and results, including accomplishing organizational objectives and key results as we work to end LGBTQ youth suicide
Manage and develop a team of Research leaders to carry out high-impact research and ensure the professional development and continued engagement of all members of the Research team
Oversee multiple short- and long-term priority projects, providing clear input on some and leading on others while effectively directing the efforts of others across work streams
Help build and manage partnerships and alliances to advance and refine the research strategy
Draw on a high level of emotional intelligence and political savvy to navigate different internal and external stakeholders’ motivations, build consensus, and create opportunities
Develop a plan to ensure ongoing evaluation of The Trevor Project’s programs, by collaborating with leaders in other departments and ensuring we are collecting and tracking needed data to perform proper evaluation
Work with other leaders and teams within the Community team and throughout Trevor on strategy and decision-making in order to ensure accountability, strategic alignment, and results
Collaborate with the Growth Team to ensure strategic alignment and identify cross-cutting initiatives and opportunities.
Represent The Trevor Project as a speaker and supportive external ambassador of the organization to key external constituencies in speaking engagements, conferences, and in other research, mental health, suicide, and educational spaces.
