Associate Director, Global Transfer Pricing

Excellent opportunity for a motivated and strategic thinker to assume the Associate Director of Tax Transfer Pricing role within the Carrier Tax organization, responsible for addressing the transfer pricing needs of the HVAC business as well as other important global initiatives. This role will be the transfer pricing lead for one of Carrier’s three business units (BU). The HVAC BU represents over 50% of Carrier’s total net sales, and nearly 50% of Carrier’s overall profits.
This role will serve as a strategic partner to the business on all transfer pricing matters, to drive value and consistency within the Tax function and mitigate risk globally. This will include playing a pivotal role in working with HVAC executive leadership in seeing through the acquisition of a controlling stake in Toshiba Carrier Corporation and the formation of a newly created dedicated and unified Residential Light Commercial “RLCS” and Variable Refrigerant Flow “VRF” global business segment within the HVAC BU, which is both historic and transformative in accelerating growth in one of the fastest growing HVAC segments.
Primary responsibilities include:
Partner with our Tax Planning Associate Director to serve the HVAC BU in planning and implementing strategies to reduce the company’s effective tax rate, assist business development with tax issues related to mergers & acquisitions, supply chain realignment/manufacturing footprint changes, assist with transfer pricing controversy and compliance matters, and address tax issues raised by Carrier’s business unit operations. Specific responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
Collaborating with HVAC leadership as they stand up the new RLCS/VRF segment to ensure tax considerations such as, but not limited to, intellectual property alignment, direct and indirect tax impacts from supply chain flow changes, potential exit tax costs, etc. are factored into the optimal operating model design.
Advise the Business Development team on transfer pricing considerations of HVAC M&A deals
Conduct due diligence on targets
Cross functional teaming with business development, legal, treasury, and accounting
Post-acquisition integration, especially as it relates to IP
Tax Transfer Pricing focal for Carrier’s largest strategic business unit, addressing transfer pricing issues raised by operations
Understand the business objectives of operations and supply chain flows
Anticipate Foreign, Federal, and State income and transaction tax issues raised by operations
Research and work with outside advisers, as necessary, to understand the tax consequences of such issues and propose alternatives to minimize taxes
Partnering with the international planning team on establishing Carrier’s IP strategy for the HVAC BU, identifying direct tax and transfer pricing planning opportunities, and mitigating tax risks and exposures
Partnering with the business and indirect tax team on VAT and customs duty considerations of supply chain changes
Assist with business restructuring analyses, often leading the valuation efforts and analyses regarding compensability of the transfer
Lead transfer pricing defense on HVAC Federal, State, and foreign tax audit activities
Education / Certifications:
Undergraduate degree in accounting, economics, finance, or related area.
Advanced degree (JD, MST, or Masters in Economics) preferred
Experience / Qualifications:
10+ years of transfer pricing experience
Ability to understand complex tax concepts and apply business facts
Ability to drive business change and to implement complex tax projects
Knowledge of US taxation of international transactions
Ability to recognize key issues and effectively communicate those to management and service providers in an articulate and concise manner
Strong tax modeling skills
Strong interpersonal skills, including ability and desire to communicate and collaborate with executive leadership across functional areas of the organization beyond Tax
Strong project management skills
Good business sense and creative problem-solving skills
Self-motivated, able to work independently and meet deadlines
Excellent organizational and time management skills
