Position Overview
Serves as the organization’s lead in creating the strategic vision and establishing the resources needed to achieve the Step Up For Students’ philanthropic goals. This individual works closely with both internal and external organizational stakeholders and contributes to the creation and implementation of strategies for the cultivation and solicitation of major gift prospects, including corporate, foundation, and/or individual donors. Additionally, he/she manages internal teams and external relationships with regard to restricted and unrestricted funding. Determines effective strategies for identifying donors and prospects. Manages opportunities for donors to receive recognition and increase future giving opportunities. Works with industry organizations to help engage specific industries and identifies opportunities for unrestricted giving. Assists in a supervisory role with other team members.
Essential Functions

Assists in oversight of fundraisers who collectively meet or exceed the annual fundraising goal for the entire organization.
Meets with prospective donors on a regular basis to establish effective close relationships that result in successful solicitation and stewardship.
Conducts research and identifies foundation, corporate, innovative, and unique fundraising opportunities in order to build a solid portfolio of viable major donor prospects/companies to assist the team in achieving its fundraising goals. Carries out additional research to support the organization in the development of a prospect pipeline and prospect qualification.
Develops strategies that meet high-level fundraising goals and close six- and seven-figure gifts. Plans and implements long-term fundraising strategies to attract large, multi-year support for the vision of the organization.
Partners with program staff to develop and write proposals for private foundations and corporations and ensures effective and timely reporting.
Provides vital input in short- and long-term strategic and operational planning and positioning within the organization.
Evaluates the effect of internal and external forces on the organization and its fundraising and recommend short- and long-range fund development plans and programs that support the organization’s values, mission, and general objectives.
Develops a funding mix of donor sources and solicitation programs tailored to the needs of the organization that will enable it to attract, retain, and motivate donors and volunteers.
Assists in leading the development team and the organization to perform at a higher level and to embrace change. Builds motivated, high-performing teams and understands what motivates different people.
Represents the organization at events and meetings that support the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of donors.
Works closely with the Vice President, Development to plan, develop and execute communication strategies for fundraising objectives.
Helps oversee the maintenance of a strong stewardship program aimed at cultivating deeper relationships with donors to ensure continued support.
Promotes and fosters a culture of giving within Step Up For Students.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree and ten years of development experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Proven experience in developing strategies to meet high-level fundraising goals and closing six- and seven-figure gifts. Comprehensive management skills and experience are required, including but not limited to short and long-term planning, evaluation, directing and motivating staff, marketing and financial management, organizational behavior, development, and governance. Successful track record of managing staff as well as multiple projects. Tangible experience of having expanded and cultivated existing donor relationships over time. Must have a high integrity work ethic and be able to maintain confidentiality.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Demonstrates ability of using effective interpersonal skills, listening, diplomacy and tact to build strong relationships with donors, volunteers, and all levels of staff.
Well-developed written and oral communication, negotiating and organizational skills. Proficient in composing and editing compelling and accurate copy.
Knowledge and/or experience in the educational choice movement preferred.
Knowledge of current trends in charitable giving.
Knowledge of basic 501c3 and charitable tax regulations regarding charitable giving.
Knowledge of databases, Internet and personal productivity software such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint is required. Experience with CRM platforms such Raiser’s Edge is helpful.
Successful experience in managing and tracking multiple prospects and donors.
Outstanding interpersonal and self-motivational skills. A creative and innovative thinker.
Strong ability to lead projects and collaborate with others both within and outside the department.
Ability to negotiate skillfully to achieve a fair outcome or promote a common cause.

Ability to work effectively in high-tension situations and maintain composure under pressure. Approaches every project with drive and energy, keeping an eye on results. Manages and prioritizes tasks from multiple sources.
Ability to make good decisions based on analysis, wisdom, experience, and judgment.Ability to act independently and maintain confidentiality.
Successful experience in developing, directing and managing multiple projects.
Strong communication and presentation skills; ability to persuasively convey the mission of SUFS to diverse groups including donors, corporate executives, board members and others who are important to the organization’s overall prosperity.
Ability to educate and inform prospective and existing donors about appropriate giving vehicles.
Ability to communicate a compelling and inspired vision or sense of core purpose.

Work Environment
This position is remote but may travel frequently both in state and nationally (40%-50% annually is expected).
