Description :
The Part-time Recreation Specialist serves under Residential Care within the Recreation Department in structuring, planning and implementing age-appropriate and developmentally appropriate recreational activities, while enhancing and supporting the cottage milieu. Recreation pursuits are designed to ensure the success of all Residents by helping them explore, refine, and fortify their gifts endowed by God. Recreation programs and activities provide youth in care with opportunities for normal social interaction, the acquisition of recreational and life skills, a means for a positive impulse outlet, and the chance to improve their quality of life.
EDUCATION
High School Graduate or GED equivalency required
College Degree in Recreation, Physical Education, or related field and one to two years’ experience in field of recreation preferred, or any combination of training, education and experience which would provide the required knowledge, abilities and skills
QUALIFICATIONS
Certified Lifeguard
Must be willing to work with youth of all ages and genders
Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in written form
Must possess a calm demeanor and be able to work effectively in high stress situations
When addressing residents, must maintain maturity to respond to unacceptable behavior
Sensitivity to the service population’s cultural and socioeconomic characteristics
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Use a curriculum model, develop and implement the Recreation Department’s philosophy, goals, program structure, and policies to meet the needs of residents
Work with cottage staff through staffing and treatment team meetings, plan and implement recreation and leisure activities that support cottages’ recreational needs
Develop and implement a recreational program that supports and enhances the cottage milieu
Facilitate recreation, sports and leisure activities with residents
Responsible for planning, scheduling, and oversight of cottage recreation funds through campus chores
Responsible for planning, scheduling, and oversight of recreational facility usage
Assist with supervision and implementation of departmental activities on designated weekends, after school, school holidays, and summer breaks
Exercise professionalism by keeping abreast with current trends, developments and trainings in the field of Recreation
Will perform other recreation duties as assigned by Residential Care Director or Recreation Coordinator

This job has no direct supervisory responsibilities at this time
CERTIFICATES LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Valid Florida Driver’s License
