Summary
Responsible to help families become more self-sufficient and provide an environment where adults and children can develop to their fullest potential. The Family Service Worker ensures that families receive the support and services prescribed in the Head Start Performance Standards and applicable directives.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Gather information for Community Assessment and document on form.
Make home visits and complete Family Partnership Agreements and follow-up.
Provide information on community services, follow-up services, and make referrals to assure delivery of needed services.
Secure resources and provide crisis intervention services and document in family files.
Participate on program self-assessment team for annual assessment of the Family Services area.
Maintain confidentiality of all child, family, and staff records.
Assist with developmental assessments.
Assist in performing recruitment, selection, and enrollment functions including publicity, answering questions, assistance in completing applications, follow-up on incomplete applications, application data entry, acceptance letters, classroom assignments, development and maintenance of waiting list, and filling vacancies within thirty (30) days.
Provide information to update Community Resource Directory and distribute to parents.
Assist with parent orientation.
Record and monitor monthly attendance. Contact families when children are absent for three (3) consecutive days without prior notifications and excused absence in coordination with Center Coordinator or teachers.
Confer with and counsel parents as needed.
Maintain thorough, accurate, and up-to-date social service records on all Head Start families.
Arrange for transportation for children for screening, treatment, therapy, and in case of emergencies, transportation for parents to appointments, services, and meetings with the approval of the Family Services Coordinator.
Contact Family Service Coordinator to identify inadequacies of existing community resources and/or the need for additional services; advocate for improved or new services.
Assist with transportation as a bus escort when needed.
Data entry into CHILD PLUS.
Provide information for and assist in the distribution of program and parent newsletters.
Assist in monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of services.
Keep the Center Coordinator, and other Staff regularly informed on activities being planned and implemented.
Assist the Center Coordinator, and teachers carrying out programmatic decisions to implement the Head Start program.
Attend and participate in staff meetings and in-service training.
Participate in periodic evaluation with supervisor.
Participate in pre- and in-service training and staff development opportunities for personnel and Head Start parents.
Plan, conduct, or coordinate parent workshops to meet requirements of Head Start Performance Standards and assessed needs of Head Start parents.
Participate in program and individual staff improvement activities.
Assist with parent meetings.
Serve as an advocate for the Head Start program. Promote good public relations by serving on boards, committees, and participating in community services.
Develop relationships with community resources, especially the social services community.
Work with other community organizations to update and distribute an up-to-date Community Resource Guide.
Work with Head Start parents and other community organizations to develop and maintain an up-to-date Community Assessment.
Drive the Head Start bus as needed.
Maintain contact with professionals in areas which impact Head Start and social services by attending professional meetings.
Good attendance is an essential part of this position.
Understand and respect the Chain of Command.
Perform any other duties as assigned by the Center Coordinator or the Head Start Director that is in the best interest of the agency.
Education and/or Experience
High School diploma or general education degree (GED) or equivalent combination of education and work experience. Within eighteen months of hire must have a credential or certification in social work, human services, family services, or a related field.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
Current Driver’s License; Proper proof of vehicle insurance coverage. Comply with background and physical screening. Must complete the 40-clock hour Introductory Child Care training and 5-clock hour Early Literacy and Language Development. Must be willing to obtain a CDL license.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include ability to adjust focus.
